‘Get to Know Satellite’ Webinar: Connecting and Inspiring

We were thrilled to host our first ‘Get to know Satellite’ webinar on Thursday 22 August. We love talking about Satellite and how our fun, creative programs connect and empower young people who have a family member living with mental health challenges. Over the hour we were inspired by the lived experience of the fabulous Ren from our Youth Advisory Council, as well as the words from our Co-Founder and CEO, Rose, and our wonderful Intake & Family Liaison, Mel. The webinar was a great introduction to Satellite and our flagship programs ahead of the September school holidays.

We did record the ‘Get to know Satellite’ webinar, so if you missed it, you can view it here!

Our flagship programs are a great way to connect with Satellite but are not the only way! We also have creative projects, partnership, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities. To find out more get in touch!

Some Q&A from the webinar:

  • Just curious if participants may join the program/s post the death of a family member who was experiencing mental health issues please?

Yes, a participant can join post the death of a family member.

  • If a young person in a family with someone with a mental health challenge attends regular psychologist appointments can they still participate with Satellite Foundation?

Yes, they can.

  • Do your programs run over Christmas break?

We do not run programs over the Christmas break, however we start again in mid-late January.

  • Are the camps for the child only or do they include provision for one or both parents?

Our Satellite Camps are only for children and young people. We do offer Family Retreats that cater for one or both parents/carers.

  • Are young people who are also experiencing mental health challenges (as well as the family member) welcomed?

Yes, a young person with mental health challenges is welcomed at Satellite. The family member forms part of our whole-of-family approach and usually does not join in the program specifically.

  • If the family member is diagnosed with autism, is the young carer eligible for Satellite Foundation?

Yes, they are.

  • What is the process if there are safety/wellbeing concerns raised by the young person during their participation?

Satellite is a child safe organisation and we take wellbeing concerns very seriously. We keep up to date with the ongoing legal and reporting requirements. Our staff are trained in what to do in an instance where child safety concerns have been raised.

  • At camps, how are dispensing / secure storage of medicines handled for children who may require them while at camp?

There are two first aid trained staff members who are responsible for dispensing medicines. These medicines are kept secure in a dedicated box in the camp office.

  • How frequent are your creative/artistic sessions held online for the young people (particularly primary school age)?

Programs and workshops for primary school age are generally held every school holiday.
